Georges River Council Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony

Mr MARK COURE (Oatley)

—Speaker, Australia Day is such an important time of the year for the thousands of people across the State. Each year, we join to celebrate the successes of local champions, whilst also presenting certificates of Citizenship to new Australian citizens. I had the opportunity to take part in these celebrations at Georges River Council's Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony. It was incredible to see 500 residents of the St George celebrate becoming Australian citizens. I believe that our diversity is our strength, and nowhere is that more clearly displayed than right here in the St George area. We are fortunate to live in one of the most multicultural, multifaith places in all of New South Wales. It was a special occasion for everyone who received a certificate of citizenship, but even more so for our community, state and nation, who had the privilege of welcoming our new citizens with open arms. I would like to thank everyone from Georges River Council, Mayor Sam Elmir, Ms Amanda Rose and the Councillors for hosting a wonderful event. I look forward to continuing these celebrations next Australia Day.
