Penshurst RSL Vietnam Veterans - Commemorative Service

Mr MARK COURE (Oatley)

—Speaker, I rise to recognise the sacrifices, bravery, and efforts of Vietnam War veterans in our local area. Eight Veterans from the Penshurst RSL Sub-Branch recently had the opportunity to take part in a commemorative service, held at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra. The commemorative service marked the 50th anniversary of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. From all accounts, the battles in Vietnam were unlike anything Australia or the world has ever seen. We acknowledge over 500 Australians who sadly lost their lives during the War, and the further 3000 that were wounded. Whilst over 60,000 Australians served during the Vietnam War, many of them returned home to scathing criticism. Whilst attitudes have certainly changed over time, it is still important to remember their sacrifices through commemorative events. Recognising the service of our Vietnam War Veterans is so important, and we owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who served. I'd like to thank President of the Penshurst RSL Sub-branch, Mr Keith Pratt, as well as all those who had the privilege of attending this important ceremony.
