Ramadan Night Markets

Mr MARK COURE (Oatley) (16:53:01):

This year I had the privilege of attending the Ramadan night markets in Lakemba, which are held each year during the month of Ramadan as a way of celebrating Islamic culture and tradition in Sydney. The month of Ramadan is the most significant month in the Islamic calendar. During this month people of Islamic faith fast during the day and gather at sunset for iftar, an evening meal, to break their fast. Open from sunset to the early hours of the morning, this event in Lakemba has gained significance over the past few years not only statewide but also throughout Australia. It is not an event to be missed. The atmosphere is absolutely electric. The streets were lined with thousands of people, all enjoying food from over 70 vendors on Haldon Street in Lakemba. As the former Minister for Multiculturalism, I was proud to support and champion this event over the past couple of years. Those markets continue to attract record numbers each year, which is a testament to New South Wales' rich diversity. I look forward to supporting next year's event.
