Wheelchair Sports NSW on the Move

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey and Member for Oatley Mark Coure have announced a $100,000 grant to Wheelchair Sports NSW for 20 new wheelchairs and a new van.

Wheelchair Sports NSW has been running a travelling Roadshow for the past 16 years visiting schools and community groups, highlighting the dangers of engaging in risky behaviour on our roads.

Minister Pavey said the $100,000 grant will allow the organisation to purchase 20 new wheelchairs to replace the current ones which are in s state of disrepair, as well as a new van for transport.

“This will allow Wheelchair Sports NSW to continue its vitally important work in raising awareness of the dangers of risky behaviour while driving.

During the past year the Wheelchair Sports Roadshow has visited 255 schools and community groups and had over 38,000 participants. This includes the BStreetsmart Forum for schools at SOP.

The Roadshow is conducted by the members of Wheelchair Sports NSW all of whom have a disability. With some of these members, their disability had been caused by a motor vehicle accident.

Member for Oatley Mark Coure said he was delighted that the NSW Government had been able to assist Wheelchair Sports NSW to continue the great work they are doing in promoting safe driving particularly amongst young people”.

“I have been a supporter of Wheelchair Sports NSW for a long time and their travelling Roadshow is saving lives and making a difference in reducing the road toll,” Mr Coure said.

Chief executive of Wheelchair Sports NSW Jim O’Brien said the Wheelchair Sports Roadshow will get a new lease of life with the replacement of wheelchairs and a Roadshow van.

“This funding will enable our Wheelchair Sports Roadshow to upgrade our wheelchairs as well as a Roadshow van that travels the length and breadth of the State delivering a strong road safety message.

“Wheelchair Sports NSW thanks Minister Pavey for her recognition of the importance of this road safety program.”
