The NSW Premier visits St George Hospital

St George Hospital will have an expanded birthing suite and refurbished operating theatres as part of its $277 million upgrade, with $11.5 million committed in the NSW Budget 2018.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Health Minister Brad Hazzard and Member for Oatley Mark Coure today visited St George Hospital to tour the new state-of-the-art Acute Services Building and meet with staff.

“The NSW Government is continuing to invest in building world-class health facilities. This year we are spending more than $2.3 billion on capital works to continue building and redeveloping hospitals, health facilities and ambulance stations, part of a record $8 billion investment over the next four years,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Here at St George, we have committed $11.5 million to expand and upgrade the birthing suite at St George Hospital and refurbish existing theatres.”

The new birthing suite will include eight birthing rooms and two assessment rooms.

Mr Hazzard said the St George Hospital redevelopment would deliver cutting-edge medical innovations.

“St George Hospital has always been synonymous with clinical excellence – this upgrade helps the dedicated staff to continue delivering for patients.”

Mr Coure said the people of South East Sydney are benefiting from the Liberals & Nationals’ record hospital building boom.

“The $277 million St George Hospital redevelopment is on top of the recently completed $62.9 million redevelopment of Sutherland Hospital and the start of the magnificent $720 million Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick Campus redevelopment,” Mr Coure said.

“The NSW Government is ensuring frontline health care in Sydney’s eastern region is delivered in state-of-the-art facilities now and well into the future.”

In 2014, the new $43.7 million emergency department at St George Hospital opened.

St George Hospital is one of the busiest in the State and each year sees more than 80,000 patients.

Earlier this month, works commenced on St George Hospital Cancer Care Centre, which will create more treatment space for patients, including a purpose-built Haematology Oncology Day Centre and outpatient clinic.

St George Hospital’s Acute Services Building includes:

• A 52-bed intensive care and high dependency unit
• Cardiac catheterisation unit
• 128 inpatient beds
• A sterilising services department
• Eight additional digital and interventional operating theatres

The redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2019.
