Georges River College Peakhurst – Fishtank Competition Finalists

Mr MARK COURE (Oatley)

—Speaker, I rise to congratulate year 10 students from Georges River College Peakhurst. These exceptional young minds have been recognised as finalists in the FishTank Competition, as a part of the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival. These students are paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future, coming up with a 'Mechanically Driven Artificial Upwelling' system. This is where colder and more nutrient-rich water is drawn up from the depths of the ocean to the surface. This artificially simulates the process of upwelling, attracting nutrient-rich water, which is important to sustain marine life. I'd like to congratulate students Lillian King, Abigail McKenzie, Amelia Wilson, Tahlia Coulton, Abbie Clay and Mya Wong, as well as Principal Diane Wilson and teacher Ahmad Bousaleh for their hard work. These are the future leaders of tomorrow and without this type of innovation, we would not have the resources or ingenuity to tackle pressing ecological issues, such as preserving our oceans and combating climate change. Congratulations again to all the finalists! I look forward to seeing what these young people achieve over the next few years.
