Works begins on new gymnasium for Georges River College

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell, Education Minister Adrian Piccoli and Oatley MP Mark Coure today turned the first sod for a new gymnasium and sports courts at Georges River College, Peakhurst Campus.

The modern facility will replace the 38-year-old Binidome structure which has outlived its serviceable life. “The NSW Government is determined to ensure students and teachers have access to the best facilities in our public schools – this is another example of us delivering,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“The local community has been campaigning for a new gymnasium for some time and I’m delighted we are making it happen.”

Mr Piccoli said the NSW Government is investing $5.7 million for the new building which is due for completion in mid-2014.

“Engineers assessed the Binidome and came to the conclusion that it would be better to demolish it and build a new facility rather than try to patch up the existing building,” Mr Piccoli said.

“That’s great news for students at Georges River College, as well as neighbouring schools and the community who will also use the new facility. “Across NSW we are investing almost $450 million this financial year to provide new facilities and to improve existing facilities at our public schools.

“I congratulate Mark Coure for his tireless advocacy for this project which is now coming to fruition.” Mr Coure said the new gymnasium will also include a stage, showers, change rooms, toilets, storage areas, first-aid area and control room.

“The new gym will be a first class facility for sports like basketball, netball and volleyball as well as many other uses. “I’m delighted to have secured this significant investment for education in our local community.”
