Students at Penshurst Public School started their 2021 school year today in new and upgraded facilities with the redevelopment of the school now complete.
The $45 million redevelopment has delivered 47 new teaching spaces, as well as new administration and staff facilities, staff and student amenities, a library, a covered outdoor learning area, a hall and increased open play space, with a large rooftop playground.
Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, said he was thrilled to see the students greatly benefit from the new facilities.
“Students from all year levels will have access to the maximised open play space and extensive rooftop playground. This new school will benefit generations to come in the community,” Mr Coure said.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said 2021 is set to be another big year for public schools with more than 30 new and upgraded schools expected to open this year.
“The scale of the school building in NSW is unprecedented – the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW and today more communities across the state will benefit,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“In the last two years, the NSW Government has opened more than 100 new and upgraded schools, benefitting tens of thousands of students and ensuring our growing communities have quality schools to learn in.”
“In the face of a challenging pandemic, we are staying on course and will keep on building more classrooms, school halls and libraries in 2021.”
Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell, said NSW students will benefit from $350 million of new and upgraded public schools opening for the new year.
“The NSW Government continues to deliver the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW, with nine new and upgraded schools ready for the first day of Term 1 this year. We will continue to work hard to deliver the very best for our students,” Minister Mitchell said.
The students starting at Penshurst Public School today are part of more than 820,000 students projected to enrol in NSW public schools in 2021.
The NSW Government is investing $7 billion over the next four years, continuing its commitment to deliver more than 200 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW.
As the new school term begins, parents are also being encouraged to apply for the popular $100 Active Kids and Creative Kids voucher to allow young people to find their passion and learn new skills.
“To date, more than 3.3 million Active Kids and Creative Kids vouchers have been redeemed with $334 million provided back to NSW families,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“We know families are doing it tough across NSW, having experienced drought, bushfires and a pandemic and I want the community to know reducing cost of living pressures is at the front of our minds as a Government.”
