More Co-ed and Single Sex School Options in the St George Area

Families in the Georges River College catchment area will have more options to send their children to co-educational and single sex high schools from 2022 following changes to in-area enrolment boundaries.

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, welcomed these changes as a means of supporting the learning options of students while providing flexibility for themselves and their families.

“This is great news for local high school students because it provides greater options when they are choosing the educational setting that is right for them,” Mr Coure said.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell, said that changing the current boundaries would provide greater opportunities to students and more choices to parents.

“Across the state we have been talking to school communities who only have access to single sex high schools, helping to better understand what their needs are,” Minister Mitchell said.

“After discussions with the Georges River school community, we developed a strategy to provide co-educational as well as single-sex options to all families residing in the single gender school intake area.”

As a result, from Term 1, 2022, the intake areas for all Georges River College 7-10 campuses, which currently designate some students to co-ed schools and others to single-sex schools, will change to give prospective Year 7 students a choice of both co-ed and single-sex options.

“This means that parents in the Georges River College catchment will be able to send their children to any of the college’s campuses – either single sex or co-ed,” Mr Coure said.

“As a parent, I welcome these reforms and it is fantastic to see that our Government is supporting students to make the choices that are right for them.”

“I have listened to the needs of local residents and it is great to see that these concerns have not only been heard by the Government but supported as well.”

Definitive boundaries and further information on these changes will become available in due course and in time for Term 1 2022, when these changes are enforced.
