Mark Coure Announces Tender for St George Hospital New Birthing Unit

Local mothers and their newborns will soon be at home in a new $11.5 million state-of-the-art birthing suite and refurbished operating theatres at St George Hospital.Member for Oatley, Mark Coure MP today announced that Fugen Constructions has been awarded the contract for the new birthing unit.

Visiting the former Acute Services Ward which will be the location of the new birthing unit, Mr Coure said construction will commence on the $11.5 million project in the coming months, delivering new birthing suites with fit-for-purpose birthing rooms including water immersion facilities.

This announcement follows on from the Premier’s announcement in February of $385 million of funding for Stage 3 of the Hospital’s redevelopment which will create a new precinct including an ambulatory care unit, outpatient and day surgery services, a new day rehabilitation unit, increased subacute inpatient beds and a hub for community health and home-based services.

“This upgrade will allow the dedicated staff to continue to improve on the exceptional care they already provide to mothers,” Mr Coure said. “I am proud to be continually delivering for our local community’s health care needs by making St George Hospital the state’s premier health destination.”

The St George Hospital birthing suite was built in 1972 and underwent upgrading in 1991. The 2017 opening of the hospital’s new Acute Services Building has enabled room for a new birthing suite to be developed on Level 2 of the Tower Block, which will ensure high quality care for the 2,700 births which take place at the hospital each year.

The works will also see the refurbishment of existing operating theatres in the hospital, which manage more than 17,500 surgeries for patients each year.
