Budding horticulturalists funded at Peakhurst South Public School

Minister for the Environment Robyn Parker and Member for Oatley Mark Coure will today present a $3,500 Environmental Trust grant to Peakhurst South Public School students to fund innovative food gardens.

Ms Parker said the funding was one of 25 worthy projects across NSW sharing $87,500 in this round of the Food Gardens in Schools grant program.

“I commend the teachers at Peakhurst South Public School for putting forward plans to educate students about nutrition, gardening and environmental sustainability in such a hands-on and rewarding way,” Ms Parker said.

“The food garden planned at the school will also involve the wider community and this is a key to empowering people to become directly involved in caring for their local environments.

“An investment of $3,500 into the school will pay incalculable dividends as these students grow their understanding of the environment and how they interact with it.”

Mr Coure said the school presented a food garden plan that would teach students about environmental science while building skills they would carry for a lifetime.

“Peakhurst South Public School is complementing existing solar power and water conservation projects by helping the school’s gardening club design and manage a new food garden.”

Eco Schools, another Environmental Trust grant program, is delivering a further $117,500 to fund 47 innovative environmental projects across the state. In total more than $2 million is being awarded to environmental initiatives in this round.

The NSW Environmental Trust is an independent statutory body established by the NSW government to fund a broad range of organisations to undertake projects that enhance the environment of NSW.
