Meals on Wheels

Mr MARK COURE (OatleyMinister for Multiculturalism, and Minister for Seniors)

——I rise today to recognise Meals on Wheels which is an outstanding community organisation that has been doing incredible work in the St George area for over 60 years. Each year in NSW, the organisation delivers over 4.5 million individual meals thanks to their 14,000 strong army of volunteers. These services are often a lifeline to vulnerable and less mobile members of the community, particularly senior citizens who rely on these meals to get the nutrition they need. Before my involvement in Meals on Wheels as a volunteer, I was unaware of how prevalent malnutrition was in older Australians. Not only does the organisation provide meals, they also provide education on the importance of a balanced and healthy diet. With 150 local Meals on Wheels branches across the State, they are a large organisation both in contribution and in outreach. I encourage anyone who is interested in getting involved in their local branch to do so now. It is most certainly a rewarding experience and it is one that I thoroughly enjoy and always look forward to.
