39th Greek Festival of Sydney

Mr MARK COURE (Oatley)

—Speaker, it was an honour to be hosted by the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW at a suite of events to commemorate the 39th Greek Festival of Sydney. This year's festivities were dedicated to the celebration of 200 years of Greek Independence, commemorating those who stood firm against the Ottoman Empire's oppression to establish freedom and democracy. I was particularly moved by the launch event for the festival and I want to thank everyone who came together to mark the occasion including: Harry Danalis – President of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, The Hon. Christos Karras – Consulate General of Greece in Sydney, The Hon. Alex Hawke MP – Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Sophie Cotsis – Member for Canterbury, Stephen Kamper – Member for Rockdale, Eleni Petinos – Member for Miranda and Nia Karteris – Festival Chair of the Greek Festival of Sydney. It was also fantastic to be a part of the lighting of the Sydney Opera House event to showcase our Government's support for all Greek Australians. I look forward to supporting our local Greek community well into the future.
