Commonwealth Day 2021

Mr MARK COURE (Oatley)

—Speaker, Commonwealth Day is an important day on the calendar for both its historical significance and the social importance that it carries. Earlier this year, I had the honour of joining the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to mark the occasion with a fantastic luncheon alongside other Members of Parliament. Commonwealth Day celebrates the Commonwealth of Nations which is a network of 54 countries that dates back to the origins of British colonialism. I would like to thank the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Ms Helen Minnican, for inviting me to this fantastic event. I am continually fascinated by our imperial ancestry and the systems of Government, democracy and law that it entails. The theme for 2021 was "Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating and Transforming." This highlights how the Commonwealth is working towards positive and holistic outcomes in the international community in areas such as trade and environmental protection. Thank you again to Helen Minnican for hosting me at this interesting and insightful event.
