St George sets the standard with major Return & Earn milestone

Residents across the Georges River area have returned more than 120.5 million bottles, cans and cartons through the Return and Earn scheme, since its launch in December 2017.

There are now 9 return and earn points operating across the local area, with more than 77 million containers returned through local return points at Carss Park, Mortdale RSL, Boundary Road Peakhurst, and Grandviews Peakhurst alone.

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, said he was incredibly proud to see how the community had embraced this program from day one.

“When we first launched this program under the former NSW Liberal Government, we couldn’t have predicted just how popular it would be. In just 8 short years, $1.3 billion worth of refunds have gone back into people’s pocket right across NSW,” Mr Coure said.

“In our community alone, over $12 million has been returned into the pockets of local residents. This program has helped raise funds for everything, from weddings and holidays, to providing care for sick children and meals for people doing it tough.”

The environmental impact of the returned containers in the Georges River, when compared to making new containers is:

  • Water savings equivalent to 281 Olympic swimming pools.
  • Energy savings equivalent to powering 1,638 homes for an entire year.
  • Carbon emission savings equivalent to taking 8,720 cars off the road annually.

“This truly is such a great program and I’d like to encourage our community to keep returning and recycling their used cans, bottles and glasses.”
