St George Hospital Redevelopment Shaping Up To Provide A "Major Boost" For Local Healthcare

The $411 million Stage 3 redevelopment of St George Hospital has reached a significant milestone, with the brand-new, nine-storey Kensington Street building officially topped off after reaching its highest point.

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, joined Shadow Minister for Health, Kellie Sloane, onsite to inspect the progress, alongside senior medical professionals Dr David Malouf (Medical Staff Council), Dr Andrew Ng, and Dr Emmanuel Karantanis.

Mr Coure welcomed the progress, highlighting the project’s importance for the community.

“St George Hospital is the jewel in the crown of our local health system, and this upgrade is a game-changer—delivering new outpatient services, more beds, and upgraded medical facilities for our growing community,” Mr Coure said.

“In particular, the new Ambulatory Care building on Kensington Street will serve as a one-stop shop, centralising services so that patients receive the highest quality care from our dedicated doctors, nurses, and hospital staff.”

The St George Hospital redevelopment will provide:

  • A new Ambulatory Care building to consolidate outpatient services, improving patient access
  • More hospital beds to support increased demand
  • Specialty units for treating complex medical conditions, including a Cognitive Transition Unit for patients with mild to moderate acquired brain injuries and an Aged Care Unit for older patients with complex conditions such as dementia and delirium
  • Upgraded medical facilities to enhance the delivery of healthcare
  • Additional parking for patients, visitors, and staff

Shadow Minister for Health, Kellie Sloane, praised the long-term commitment of the Liberals and Nationals to healthcare investment.

“The Liberals believe everyone should have access to world-class healthcare when they need it. That’s why, in government, we built or significantly upgraded 180 hospitals and health facilities across NSW, with a further 130 projects underway when we left office,” Ms Sloane said.

Since being elected, Mark has been an absolute champion for local health services. His strong advocacy for his community led to the record investment in St George Hospital’s redevelopment.

Since 2011, more than $740 million has been invested in upgrading St George Hospital, with Stage 3 building upon previous redevelopments, which has included:

  • Stage 1 completed in 2014, which delivered a new and expanded Emergency Department
  • Stage 2 completed in 2017, which delivered a state-of-the-art Acute Services Building, including additional operating theatres, day surgery and recovery spaces, a sterilising Department, a new Integrated ICU with 52 beds, cardiac catheter labs, and an additional 128 new inpatient beds. Refurbishment of the birthing suite was completed in 2020.

Additionally, the redevelopment includes a day-only infusion centre, an outpatient pharmacy, and enhanced pathology collection services, ensuring that a broad range of outpatient and specialist services are conveniently located in one facility.

“Unlike Labor, which ignored this hospital for years, the former Liberal and Nationals Government prioritised health infrastructure to ensure St George Hospital continues serving our community for generations to come,” Mr Coure said.

“These upgrades are a fantastic achievement; I will continue fighting on behalf of our community to ensure St George Hospital remains a world-class medical facility for years to come.”

The redevelopment is expected to be completed in late 2026, ensuring St George Hospital continues to provide state-of-the-art healthcare services for the growing community.
