Remediation work begins on former Oatley Bowling Club site

The local community is one-step closer to transforming the former Oatley Bowling Club site after the commencement of remediation work to decontaminate the land.

In late 2019, Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, reaffirmed the NSW Government’s $900,000 commitment to help Georges River Council rehabilitate the site and transform it into an intergenerational community hub.

Mr Coure highlighted the importance of open space for the local community, which is in line with Premier Berejiklian’s ‘Premier’s Priorities’.

“We know that green open space is one of the biggest priorities for the local community, it is critical to ensure communities thrive,” Mr Coure said.

“This site will soon boast recreational facilities, both active and passive, which will improve the lifestyle of residents and visitors alike.”

Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock labelled the commitment a “win-win situation for the Government, council and local community.”

Georges River Council have now commenced remediation work on the site, which involves the removal of contamination. This will ensure the site is safe for all members of the local community to enjoy.

Council are also continuing community consultation to decide the future of the site. This involves the engagement of a consultant to prepare a plan of management and masterplan to consider innovative concepts for the whole community to enjoy.

Mr Coure thanked Georges River Council for listening and responding to community feedback about the future of the site.

“For years, I have lobbied the Council about the future of the former Oatley Bowling Club site,” Mr Coure said.

“I am pleased to have helped protect this land and keep it an open, public space for Oatley residents and surrounding communities to enjoy.

“I also acknowledge the many members of the community who raised their concerns with my office about the future of the site and strongly advocated for this desirable outcome.”
