Protect Yourself and Your Community – Get Your Flu Shot This Winter

As winter approaches, local MP Mark Coure is urging residents across the local area to get their annual flu vaccination and help stop the spread of influenza in the community.

“Each year, thousands of Australians are hospitalised with the flu, and many of these cases are preventable,” Mr Coure said.

“Getting the flu shot is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself and those you love.”

With increased pressure on local hospitals and health services during the winter months, Mr Coure said vaccination is a critical tool in keeping the community healthy and safe.

“With flu cases expected to rise, this year’s flu season could hit hard,” Mr Coure said. “That’s why I’m encouraging everyone—especially those most at risk—to roll up their sleeve and get vaccinated.”

Flu vaccines are now available through GPs, local pharmacies, Aboriginal Medical Services, and community health centres. The vaccine is free for many people under the National Immunisation Program, including:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • Children aged six months to under five years
  • Pregnant women
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over
  • People with certain chronic health conditions

“Getting the flu shot doesn’t just protect you—it protects vulnerable people around you, like babies, the elderly, and those with serious health issues,” Mr Coure said. “It’s a small action that makes a big difference.”

Mr Coure also thanked local pharmacists and GPs for their ongoing efforts in delivering vaccinations.

“Our local health professionals do an incredible job, especially during the flu season,”

“They’re here to help—so don’t delay, book your appointment and do your part for the community.”

Mr Coure also stressed the importance of looking after one another this winter.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our community safe and strong,” he said. “Washing your hands, staying home if you’re unwell, and getting your flu shot—these are simple steps that save lives.”

Finally, Mr Coure reminded residents that preventing illness also helps protect our frontline workers and hospital system.

“Our doctors, nurses and paramedics are already under pressure,” Mr Coure said. “By getting vaccinated, you’re helping ease that burden and ensuring our health system can continue delivering care where it’s needed most.”
