Mortdale Fire Station Community Open Day

‘Check your fire alarms’ and ‘handle lithium batteries safely’ were the two key takeaways from the Mortdale Fire Station Community Open Day, held over the weekend.

Firefighters welcomed the community at the Mortdale Fire Station on Saturday as part of the annual event, offering a unique opportunity to meet local crews, learn about fire safety, and enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities.

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, said that his two boys, James and Sammy, thoroughly enjoyed their time, relishing in the opportunity to climb aboard a fire truck and tour the station.

“There was so much for the kids to see and do. They got to see the equipment and trucks up close, as well as watch demonstrations which showed the importance of preventing common household fire risks,” Mr Coure said.

“Mortdale Fire Station plays an important role in keeping our community safe and events like this are a great way to connect with families and educate our young ones on the importance of fire safety.”

Deputy Captain of Mortdale Fire Station, John Domeney, said that the open day is a great opportunity for the public to step through the station doors and see the world-class equipment and skills of Fire and Rescue NSW

“It is also a great opportunity to get up-to-date information on the emerging risks of lithium-ion batteries and make sure your home is fire safe for the winter,” Mr Domeney said.

“We all know it's a legal requirement to have one smoke alarm on every level of your home, but FRNSW recommends an alarm in as many rooms as possible, especially where devices are being charged.”

The Mortdale Fire Station Open Day is held annually as part of Fire and Rescue NSW’s statewide initiative to promote community awareness and provide residents with practical safety tips.
