what's happening / news / Media Release: NSW Psychiatry in Crisis: Mark Coure Demands Urgent Action
The NSW psychiatric care system is on the brink of collapse, with frontline workers warning of mass resignations that threaten to cripple services already under immense strain. Mark Coure, Member for Oatley, has called on the NSW Labor Government to urgently address the crisis, restore funding, and support the state’s struggling mental health sector.
"The alarming resignation of psychiatry staff highlights the failure of the NSW Labor Government to support our mental health system when it's needed most," said Mr. Coure.
"Mental health patients in our community are being let down by a government that has cut vital funding and ignored critical staffing shortages."
Reports indicate that psychiatric care services across the state are experiencing unprecedented pressure due to staff shortages and a lack of resources, leaving vulnerable patients at risk of falling through the cracks. Experts have warned that without immediate action, NSW faces a mental health crisis of unprecedented proportions.
Mr. Coure has called on the NSW Labor Government to urgently prioritise investment in mental health services.
"We need urgent investment in psychiatry services to ensure patients receive the care they deserve and to prevent further strain on our healthcare system," he said.
"The NSW Labor Government must act now to address these resignations and protect the wellbeing of our most vulnerable residents."
Mark Coure also expressed his concern for mental health workers, who are under significant stress due to the growing demands placed on them.
"Our dedicated mental health workers deserve better conditions and support. The government must stop turning a blind eye to their needs," Mr. Coure added.
"Under Labor, funding has been cut, services have been reduced, and now we are seeing the consequences with a crisis in psychiatric care. The government must take responsibility for this growing crisis and immediately reverse cuts to mental health services."
Mark Coure reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for better funding and resources to safeguard the future of mental health care in NSW.
"I will continue to fight for adequate resources and funding to ensure our community has access to the mental health care it needs."
