Following a series of violent break-ins at 10 local businesses in Lugarno, Oatley, and Peakhurst, Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, has called for urgent improvements to public safety measures in the St George area.
The appeal comes after CCTV footage captured a trio of criminals smashing doors, ransacking businesses, and stealing cash and supplies. While police investigations are underway, Mr Coure stated that business owners throughout the community are rightfully concerned for their safety.
“These break-ins have not only caused financial loss but have also left many business owners feeling vulnerable. It is so important that business owners and their staff feel safe, secure and supported when they come to work,” Mr Coure said.
“Following several meetings with local business owners, I have written to Georges River Council and the Minister for Police, the Hon. Yasmin Catley MP, requesting improved lighting, greater CCTV coverage and more frequent police patrols around shopping precincts in our community.”
It is hoped that these simple, but effective measures could help to deter future incidents and give business owners the confidence that their livelihoods are protected.
“Many of these businesses are still struggling under the current cost-of-living crisis or recovering from economic challenges in recent years. Incidents such as these only add to their ongoing hardships.”
“I look forward to working alongside Georges River Council and the Police Minister to improve public safety in the local area.”
“I encourage everyone in the community to come together and support the businesses that have been impacted. Remember to shop local and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.”
