Local students at Hannans Road Public School are starting their mornings right, thanks to a new Breakfast Club run by the Lions Club of Lugarno, in partnership with Foodbank.
Operating each Wednesday and Friday morning, the program aims to provide healthy and nutritious meals to students at the school, which has just over 100 pupils.
Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, said that the program has been a smashing success so far, ensuring that every child starts the day off with a great meal.
“This is an example of a community organisation stepping up to support local families. We know through research that kids learn better on a full stomach, so this program is helping local kids to succeed in the classroom,” Mr Coure said.
“With the rising cost-of-living, many families are already struggling to provide nutritious meals to their kids. Programs like this, while simple, help to take the pressure off local families.”
Students are treated to a rotating menu of options, including toasted sandwiches, chicken nuggets, meat pies and toasted Turkish bread with honey. To accompany the meals, fresh fruit and cold fruit drinks are also served.
The program has been made possible through the generosity of Foodbank, as well as the Crateful Group and Woolworths Riverwood, who continue to provide supplies.
“I was pleased to be able to support this program with a donation a fridge to keep all of their food cold and fresh. This helps to ensure this important program runs smoothly every week,” Mr Coure said.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported this program, especially the Lions Club of Lugarno. I look forward to supporting it well into the future.”
