Local Blind Sporting Star to represent St George Area in International Cricket Series

When Jennifer Parry of Mortdale was selected to represent Australia at the Women’s Blind Cricket Series in England last year, she couldn’t believe that her hard work had paid off.

Now, she has done it again, being selected as a part of the Australian IBC team for 2025, who will compete at the Inaugural Women’s Blind Cricket Series in Brisbane, Queensland.

The team, comprising of 15 players and a number of support staff, will take on Pakistan at a 5-match test series beginning early next week. Jennifer remarked that she was looking forward to chasing her first major win on Australian soil.

“Representing my country and my community on home soil is extra special. I’m really looking forward to the match and sharing this experience with my teammates. It’s a great feeling knowing your community is backing you,” Ms Parry said.

“I only started playing cricket a few years ago. I was looking for something to do after lockdowns that would help me reconnect with others again. I never expected it to take me to where it has today,” Ms Parry said.

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, said that this was an incredible achievement, adding to a long list of sporting stars that have come from the St George area.

“Jennifer joins the likes of rugby league star Johnny Raper and 2024 Paris Olympian, Bridget Clarke, to represent our community and country in a professional sporting arena,” Mr Coure said.

“Grassroots sports is in our DNA and Jennifer’s story is an inspiration to the next generation of keen cricketers and sports stars in the St George. When you put your mind to it, you can achieve great things.”

Blind cricket is played in essentially the same way as a conventional game of cricket, with the major exceptions of an audible ball, underarm bowling and modified fielding rules to accommodate different levels of vision.

“I’m excited to watch how they progress this season. Jennifer and her team really are paving the way for women’s blind cricket, and I hope this inspires more people to get involved in the sport.”, Mr Coure said.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported myself so far in this endeavour so far. I am looking forward to doing the St George Community proud out on the pitch,” Ms Parry said.
