Fighting for better road safety at Hurstville South Public School

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, has written directly to the Minister for Transport and Roads, Rob Stokes, regarding the need to install crash barriers along King Georges Road near Hurstville South Public School.

The need for the installation of crash barriers in the area has arisen following feedback from both the parents of students at the school and members of the public.

“I have listened to the concerns of the community on this important matter and I am taking action to ensure that we better protect the safety and wellbeing of students at all times.” Mr Coure said.

“The placement of these barriers will better protect students and members of the community when walking along the footpath near the King Georges Road entrance of the school.”

“As a main arterial road, King Georges Road has a consistent high traffic flow, particularly during school drop off and pick up periods, with thousands of cars and trucks using the road every day.”

Tragically, in September of 2019 a 12 year old student in Hurstville walking to school sadly passed away after being struck by a car which had illegally failed to stop at a red light.

“This was a horrific incident and one that we cannot see repeated. We must install these crash barriers to ensure that this never occurs again.”

Mr Coure noted that Hurstville South Public School has an enrolment of over 500 students, meaning that there is a high volume of young people entering and exiting the school grounds each day.

“We cannot put a price on the life of a child and I am committed to doing everything that I can to ensure that these crash barriers are put in place.”

“Even though a pedestrian bridge and clearly marked school zones already exist, these barriers will better protect students along the footpath and address the fact that accidents do happen and sometimes a split decision can have tragic consequences.”
