43 new doctors starting at St George Hospital

St George Hospital welcomed 43 junior medical officers to the hospital to begin their internships; part of the record-breaking cohort of 999 medical interns starting their practical training across the state. Member for Oatley, Mark Coure MP, today attended their official orientation day at the Hospital and said these new doctors represent the future of healthcare in the St George area.These doctors join a record number of new interns that have been funded under the NSW Government’s $107 million program to boost the number of doctors in cities and regional areas. “The 43 new doctors starting a St George Hospital will be trained at one of the best hospitals in the state,” Mr Coure said. “Upgrades to St George Hospital have meant a larger number of specialities are at the hospital, allowing the new doctors to gain experience and training in a variety of medical fields. “NSW is leading the way in terms of medical training. It is the only state that offers two-year employment contracts to medical graduates from NSW universities. “Doctors commencing their internships can be assured that NSW is leading the country when it comes to training junior doctors,” Mr Coure said. New doctors will complete their internships through a series of rotations at metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals, with 132 focusing specifically on rural health. “I would like to wish our interns every success as they progress in their careers,” Mr Coure said.
